New Delhi: Established in 1984 B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College was today declared deemed-to-be-university by the Central Government.

As a consequence of the new status the name of the institute will change to B.S. Abdur

Rahman Institute of Science & Technology. It will continue to be affiliated to Anna University, Chennai but it can award degrees and start new courses. Current students will get their degrees from Anna University.

Crescent Engineering College was established as a Muslim minority college by All India Islamic Foundation that runs several other colleges and schools in Tamil Nadu. The foundation works in the field of education "with special attention to technical education to the educationally, socially and economically backward communities and weaker sections of the society."

As part of the new status of the Crescent College, All India Islamic Foundation will transfer the ownership and management of the college to "B.S. Abdur Rahman Institute of Science & Technology Society" setup especially to run the deemed university.

Crescent College currently offers degrees in BE, BTech, ME, and PhD in various engineering disciplines. Crescent College is regarded as one of the best engineering college in Tamil Nadu.
